We found a great, off the beaten path, campground and booked it 10 months in advance as its small but a very popular campground, Mountain Stream RV Park .  At $47.00 a night it was a great find.  To get there was about a 6 hour drive a few miles south of Asheville, NC.  The 15 mile drive to the campground from I-40 on US 80 north is a quite curvy and narrow two lane blacktop but the view is worth it.  The facilities were great and well maintained.  No cell phone service but free internet service provided.  No firewood can be brought in due to it being in the Pisgah National Forest, however it can be bought on site for $7.00 a bundle. Our site backed right up against the mountain stream and it was so quiet and peaceful.  The weather was great for all the hiking to be found in the area.  You are within 30 minutes of the Blueridge Parkway near Mt. Mitchell.  We found numerous waterfalls that were spectacular among all the changing colors o...

Lansing, WV: 3 - 5 October 2019

A bucket list item trip to Lansing for some whitewater rafting on some class V rapids.  We found Adventures on the Gorge by googling the best whitewater rafting near KY.  The two rivers they use are the New River Gorge and the Gauley River.   No truck to pull trailer and it being a short trip we stayed at the Comfort Inn in Oak Hill, WV which was only minutes away from Adventures on the Gorge.  The drive from Frankfort was about 4 hours on I-64 east toward Beckley, WV. Our first rafting trip was on the Lower New River .  The weather was perfect upper 70s and sunny.  The river is natural flowing with class I-IV rapids and two class Vs.  Our trip left at 1010 with a bus ride about 45 min to the river entry point.  The boats are inflatables with a guide in each boat.  We had a boat of 6 passengers with Guido as our guide.  He has been doing this for over 30 years and  made it a great trip.  The other 4 in the boat were ...

Ann Arbor, MI: 8 - 15 September 2019

The hurricane that moved up the east coast resulted in the closing of James Island Recreational Park in Charleston, SC so our reservations got cancelled.  We made a last minute decision to find another location.  The unusually hot weather in KY definitely influenced our decision.  The coolest area at the time was in Michigan.  We found a campground, Holiday RV Campground , in Grass Lakes, MI.  This small quaint town is within minutes of Ann Arbor and is geographically located about 1 1/2 hours west of Detroit and Lake Erie.  The drive took about 5 1/2 hours up I-75.  The weather there was in the mid 70s and had a nice fall feel.  We really did not have any specific plan on what we wanted to do other than get somewhere that had cooler weather. Most of the residents in the campground were from down south who spend their entire summer in Michigan then head back to Florida for the winter.  The campground offers full hookups with chargeable ...
