Snowshoe Ski Resort, West Virginia: 10 - 13 February 2020

We took a short trip to Snowshoe ski resort near Beckley, WV.  My brother and his son met us over there for 2 days of skiing.  Jennifer had tried skiing in the past but the knee that she injured playing softball years ago requiring surgery put a stop to her skiing career.  She enjoyed the village and lodging amenities while we skied.

There is no easy way to get there as the resort is located in a very remote area of the WV.  Its a 5 1/2 hour drive from Frankfort.  The drive is not bad until the last 2 hours.  Regardless of coming in from the north or south you will have a very curvy narrow road.  If the weather is snowy you definitely want to be in a 4 wheel drive.

There are numerous lodging options up on the mountain which is 4,848 feet elevation.  We stayed at Highland House which was a great place to stay.  It was $110.00 a night for the midweek rate.  The condo was very nice and makes getting to the slopes very easy.  They even give you a locker in the lobby of the condo to store your ski equipment.  The back of the condo faces the slopes allowing you to walk out the back door right on the slopes.  It is also located within the summit village.  We made the reservation using Expedia.  All we had to do was check in at the top of the mountain lodge and get our room key.  We purchased the 2 day lift ticket there as well.

This was from the deck of our room

The lift ticket was 50.00 a day, a 40% veterans discount, which included night skiing at Silver Creek which is just below the summit.  A bus is available that makes routine trips between the summit and Silver Creek.  The summit slopes close at 1630.  Night skiing at Silver Creek runs until 2100.  They offer tubing there as well for an additional price.

Unfortunately, Tuesday was in the low 40's and created a lot of slush on the groomed slopes making skiing difficult.  Tuesday night the temperature dropped into the 20's allowing for great snow making.  Wednesday was a great day of skiing as almost all the slopes were open but by evening the rain returned making night skiing all but impossible.  My nephew and I did get in a couple runs at night before the rain put a stop to it.  Jennifer and my brother chose to enjoy the Silver Creek lodge instead.

Booking online gave us access to a the split rock pools and hot tubs.  Was a great way to wind down after a day of skiing.  Air temperature was low 30's but the water in both the pool and hot tubs felt really great.  If you do not get it included in your booking it costs $15.00 per person.

If you like skiing and want a taste of what a ski village has to offer this is about as good as it gets in the eastern part of the US.  Make sure the temperature at the summit stays in the low 30's to get the best skiing conditions and village experience

Next stop a cruise to Cozumel/Grand Cayman
